Amir K. Jaffer, M.D. - Curriculum Vitae

Amir K. Jaffer, MD is the Medical Director of the IMPACT (Internal Medicine Preoperative Assessment Consultation and Treatment) Center and the Anticoagulation Clinic within the Section of Hospital Medicine in the Dept. of General Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Jaffer received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1994. His postgraduate training includes an internship and residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and has a busy practice in both Hospital and Perioperative Medicine.

Dr. Jaffer is actively involved in patient care, education, research and administration. He was selected as one of the Best Doctors in America 2005-6 by Best Doctors, an independent organization that uses exhaustive, annual surveys of the medical profession. These doctors were considered by other doctors to be the best in their specialties. He is currently heading up the working group to develop the Advanced Core Curriculum at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western University. He has conducted research and published in several peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine. He will be an Associate editor of a soon to be published book titled: Hospital Medicine Secrets. He speaks nationally within his areas of interest and expertise, which include: Treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism, prevention of stroke in atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation therapy, specifically perioperative management and medical consultation.

He is an active member of several professional organizations including American College of Physicians (ACP), Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the Anticoagulation Forum (AF), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). He is a member of the Education Committee of SHM and served on the Annual Meeting Planning Committee for the 2005 SHM meeting and will be the Precourse Director of the Perioperative and Consultative Medicine Precourse at Next year’s SHM meeting in Washington DC.

Started career as a clinician educator in primary care but transitioned into a consultative and hospital based practice within the Section of Hospital and Preoperative Medicine with clinical, administrative, research and educational responsibilities in early 2001. Continue to serve as the Medical Director of the IMPACT (Internal Medicine Preoperative Assessment Consultation & Treatment) Center where over 13,000 outpatient preoperative consults are seen annually with revenues of over $4 million dollars in 2004.

Responsibilities have included:

Acting as Section head for Hospital Medicine during the chief’s absences

Working with the section head to develop a vision and plan for the Section of Hospital Medicine

Creating schedules for staffing of the IMPACT center by our group of 23 hospitalists

Attending periodic meetings with different surgeons, anesthesiologists and their chairmen to ensure their needs are met and the perioperative process is smooth

Developing new relationships with surgical departments to increase referrals to the IMPACT center

Improving the Inpatient Consultative service to better meet needs of different subspecialties

Reviewing clinical performance of the hospitalists staffing the IMPACT Center

Creating Institutional Perioperative Guidelines/algorithms for various medical conditions

Implementing an Electronic Medical Record in the IMPACT center

Recruiting and mentoring junior faculty

Development and implementation of curricula

Inpatient and Outpatient teaching of residents and students

Designing, implementing and reviewing quality improvement projects

Also continue to serve as the Medical Director of the Anticoagulation clinic (AC) since March 2000 that has a current enrollment of ~1800 patients on oral warfarin therapy and is staffed by 10 full-time pharmacists.

Responsibilities have included:

Providing clinical care, oversight and supervision of current oral anticoagulation and LMWH therapy services throughout CCF and the associated network of Family Health Centers

Assisting in the development and implementation of new programs and services

Conducting periodic quality improvement and safety projects within the AC clinic

Recruitment of new employees

Identifying and spearheading research-related activities

Providing annual and periodic review of the AC clinic guidelines, policies and procedures

Serving as the liaison to the Medical Staff for the AC clinic programs and services
